Distance: 76 km (16/20/15/25)
Duration: 4 days
We started in the 'armpit of Finland at Kalmakaltio. We walked along the Norwegian boarder river Kietsimäjoki in the remote western part of Lemmenjoki National Park. Marko started with a back-pack weighing close to 40 kilos. Enough for the poor backpack to fall to pieces several times before we finally managed to tie it together with an extra rope. We were accompanied by all kinds of mosquitoes that tried to get the better part of us. The cheep mosquito nets proved to be our most valuable piece of equipment. Closely followed by the tent that provided the only 'mosquito-free-zone' for us. We spotted plenty of large animal footprints and piles of dung. Presumably bear and wolverine. The wild animals we managed to spot live were moose, fox, eagle and ptarmigan (riekko). We found it very strange that we only saw one single reindeer during the entire hike. We got ourselves fishing equipment and permits and tried our luck in the small creeks, rivers and lakes called 'lompolo' in Sami. It certainly paid off and we had pike and perch for lunch and dinner several times. I caught more fish during this trip than I have during my entire life. I also managed to overheat my hiking boot at the camp fire and had to perform a hara-kiri on it to remove the buckled membrane inside. To get back to our car we had to ride a taxi for more than 300 kilometers.
